If you only have room for one Ghibli stop in Tokyo, pick based on tickets. The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka can only be entered with a timed ticket bought in advance. Tickets for the next month go on sale at 10 a.m. JST on the 10th, and there are none at the door. Seiseki-sakuragaoka, the town that served as a model for Whisper of the Heart (1995), costs nothing and needs no booking. It is a real residential neighbourhood, though, not an attraction. If you can get a museum ticket, doing both in one day is realistic.

How Ghibli Museum tickets work

These rules come from the museum’s official ticket page and were checked in October 2026.

  • Advance reservation only. The museum states that “No reservation or ticket purchase can be made at the Museum.”
  • Visitors from overseas can buy tickets in two ways:
    1. Lawson Ticket online. An English version is linked from the museum’s site. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. JST on the 10th of each month for the whole of the following month. For example, tickets for February go on sale on January 10.
    2. A bus tour from Sunrise Tours JTB that includes the museum along with other stops.
  • Each ticket is for a set date and entry time. There is no fixed exit time, so you can stay as long as you like once inside.
  • Buying tickets to resell is not allowed. Third-party “tickets” from resellers are best avoided.

Checklist for sale day

  • Convert 10 a.m. JST on the 10th into your own time zone.
  • Choose two or three possible dates and entry times in advance.
  • Have the visitors’ details and a working payment card ready.
  • If you are already travelling in Japan, make sure your mobile data works. See Travel Prep for a Tama Trip.
  • If tickets sell out, plan a Seiseki-sakuragaoka day instead. It needs no booking.

How the Seiseki-sakuragaoka walk works

The Youth Post at the West Exit, with the Seiseki-sakuragaoka walking map board beside it

Tama City says the backgrounds in Whisper of the Heart were drawn with heavy reference to the area around Seiseki-sakuragaoka Station. What you’ll find there:

  • The Youth Post (青春のポスト) at the station’s West Exit. Local shops and fans built this monument, modelled on the Chikyuya antique shop. Visitors can post letters about their dreams or goals in it.
  • A walking map on a board next to the post. Tama City publishes it as a PDF, and a paper version has stamp spaces for a small stamp rally.
  • The route climbs Irohazaka (いろは坂), a winding slope with a stairway that the map calls the model for the stairs in the film. It passes Konpira Shrine (金比羅神社), which the map names as the model for the spot where Sugimura confesses to Shizuku, and Tenshudai, the high point of the route. It ends at the roundabout in Sakuragaoka, also said to be a model for the film.
  • The theme song “Country Road” plays as the station’s train approach melody.

The map also asks visitors to remember that this is a residential area: don’t litter, keep your voice down, and watch for traffic where pavements are narrow.

The full walk is in Whisper of the Heart Walking Route and Map, and an overview is in Seiseki Sakuragaoka: A Local Guide.

Which should you choose?

Choose the Ghibli Museum if:

  • you managed to get a ticket for a date you’re in Tokyo,
  • you love the Ghibli films in general, not one film in particular,
  • you’re travelling with small children, or someone in the group doesn’t want a steep walk.

Choose Seiseki-sakuragaoka if:

  • the museum is sold out for your dates,
  • Whisper of the Heart is your favourite, or you enjoy walking around everyday Tokyo neighbourhoods,
  • you want a flexible day with no fixed entry time.

Do both if you have a museum ticket for a morning slot and a free afternoon.

Doing both in one day

There is no direct train between the two. One workable route:

  1. Morning: Ghibli Museum. Take the JR Chuo Line to Mitaka, then walk 15 minutes or take the community bus from the south exit. Adult bus fare is ¥230 by cash or IC card (as of October 2026, per the museum).
  2. Move to the Keio Line. Go to Kichijoji (吉祥寺) and take the Keio Inokashira Line to Meidaimae (明大前). Change there to the Keio Line toward Keio-Hachioji (京王八王子) or Takaosanguchi (高尾山口). Don’t take a Hashimoto (橋本)-bound train, because it leaves the main line at Chofu. Details are in How to Get to Seiseki Sakuragaoka From Shinjuku.
  3. Afternoon: Seiseki-sakuragaoka. Walk up Irohazaka in daylight and take a bus or walk back down to the station.

Check connection times on a route search on the day. We haven’t timed this transfer ourselves yet, so we don’t give a total here.

Where to stay for a Ghibli day

Both places are on the west side of Tokyo, so hotels near Shinjuku or along the Keio Line work for both. Compare areas in Where to Stay Along the Keio Line.

Quick facts

  • Ghibli Museum address: 1-1-83 Shimorenjaku, Mitaka-shi, Tokyo
  • Ticket sales: 10 a.m. JST on the 10th of each month, for the following month
