Keio Takaosan Onsen Gokurakuyu (京王高尾山温泉 / 極楽湯) is a day-use hot spring right next to Takaosanguchi Station, at the foot of Mt. Takao. Entry is ¥1,100 for adults on weekdays and ¥1,300 on weekends, holidays and busy periods (as of October 2026). It’s open 8:00 to 22:30 every day (last entry 21:45). The main bath is a natural hot spring in outdoor rock pools. One rule matters for many visitors: anyone with a tattoo can’t enter, including small tattoos and stick-on ones, and covering it doesn’t help.

All details below are from the onsen’s official site and Keio as of October 2026.

  • Busy periods include December 29 to January 3, Golden Week, Obon and the autumn leaves season.
  • Hours: 8:00–22:30, last entry 21:45. Open every day, but the onsen closes on a few days a year for inspections. These are announced on the website, in posters and on its X account.
  • Payment: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, UnionPay, Diners, Discover, and IC cards (Suica, PASMO). You can’t top up an IC card here.
  • No re-entry. You can bathe as many times as you like while you’re inside, but once you leave you have to pay again.

The tattoo rule

The onsen’s FAQ is very clear:

  • People with tattoos, fashion tattoos or tattoo stickers can’t enter, whatever the size.
  • Covering a tattoo with tape or a sticker isn’t allowed. It isn’t accepted as a way in, and bathing with tape on is refused for hygiene.
  • Staff will ask anyone they notice to leave. This also applies to the restaurant and other rooms.

If you have any tattoo, plan something else after your hike. The onsen doesn’t make exceptions for small or covered tattoos.

The baths

BathWhat it is
Natural hot spring outdoor rock baths (lukewarm and hot)Spring water from about 1,000 m underground
Outdoor carbonated stone bathAn artificial carbonated spring
Silk bathFine microbubbles

The spring is an alkaline simple spring (アルカリ性単純温泉), 26.2°C at the source. The onsen lists its traditional benefits as relief for muscle and joint pain and fatigue.

What to bring and what’s provided

ProvidedBring or buy
Shampoo, conditioner, body soapTowels: bring your own, or buy a face towel and rent a bath towel
  • Phones and cameras are not allowed in the bathing area.
  • No outside food or drink in the building.
  • No luggage storage. The onsen won’t keep bags, even before you enter. Use the coin lockers around Takaosanguchi Station. The cable car’s Kiyotaki Station also has lockers, open during cable car hours.
  • Strollers aren’t looked after. You can leave one in the entrance lobby if there’s space, at your own risk.

If you bought one of Keio’s Takao visitor sets on KKday or Klook, it includes a face towel voucher for Gokurakuyu.

Bathing etiquette, step by step

This follows the onsen’s own manner guide:

  1. Undress in the changing room and take only a small towel into the bath area. No swimsuits or underwear.
  2. Wash off at the showers before getting into any bath.
  3. Wash your hair and body at the washing stations, sitting down so you don’t splash others.
  4. In the bath, relax. Don’t swim, and keep your towel and hair out of the water.
  5. Dry yourself in the bath area before going back to the changing room.
  6. Drink water afterwards.

Also: no drinking alcohol before or while bathing, don’t add cold water to a hot bath, and don’t reserve washing stations or sauna seats.

Children

  • From age 7, children can’t enter the bath of the opposite sex, following a 2022 change in Tokyo’s rules. The onsen may also refuse children of 120 cm or taller even if they are younger.
  • Children can’t bathe without an adult.

Food, massage and parking

  • There’s a restaurant inside (entry fee required, even if you only eat), and a massage area that takes bookings by phone or LINE.
  • Parking: about 90 spaces, free for 3 hours for bathers. It can fill up on weekends and in busy seasons, so the onsen recommends public transport.

Keio’s onsen ticket: Takaosan Yuttari Kippu

Keio sells a weekday-only set ticket called the Takaosan Yuttari Kippu (高尾山湯ったりきっぷ). It includes:

  • A discounted round trip from your Keio station to Takaosanguchi
  • A round trip on the Takao cable car or chairlift
  • Entry to Gokurakuyu with a towel set
  • A meal voucher (a seasonal original menu)
Price from Shinjuku¥3,450 (adult only, from Keio’s fare table)
Where to buyTicket machines at Keio and Inokashira stations (not Takaosanguchi)
Not soldWeekends and holidays, Golden Week, Obon, all of November, December 30–January 3, and the onsen’s closed days

Is it worth it? Bought separately, the Takaosan Kippu (¥1,450 from Shinjuku) plus weekday entry (¥1,100) comes to ¥2,550, before towels and food. So the Yuttari Kippu is good value if you’ll eat at the onsen anyway. If you’d rather have lunch on the mountain or at Ukai Toriyama, buy the Takaosan Kippu and pay for the bath separately.

Keio’s digital sets for overseas visitors also include a Gokurakuyu towel voucher. See the Keio news release and our Keio one-day pass guide.

You can also book the Keio Line ticket for Mt. Takao on Klook.

Fitting it into the day

  • After the hike: come down by mid-afternoon and soak before the train home. Gokurakuyu is open until 22:30, so you don’t need to hurry.
  • Before Ukai Toriyama: soak, then catch Ukai’s free shuttle from in front of the station.
  • Getting there from Tokyo: the Mt. Takao day trip from Shinjuku.

Prices and hours change. Check the official site before you go.
