A rainy day is a good day for Tama Center. Sanrio Puroland is an indoor theme park: its official FAQ says everything after the entrance is indoors. Around it, within a few minutes’ walk of the station, are two shopping centers, a cinema and Parthenon Tama’s local history museum. What you should postpone is the outdoor stuff: the Whisper of the Heart walk in Seiseki Sakuragaoka is on hilly streets and is much better on a dry day.
Puroland in the rain: what to know

Puroland’s official FAQ (checked October 2026) answers the rain questions directly:
- Inside is fully indoors. Once you’ve entered, the shows, rides and restaurants are all under a roof.
- The entry queue is outside. Bring an umbrella for the wait before opening and for the roughly 5-minute walk from Tama Center (多摩センター) Station.
- There’s an umbrella cloak. If it fills up, umbrella bags are provided.
- Re-entry is allowed every day. Get a stamp on your hand at the exit, and you can go out for lunch and come back.
- Hours change by date, and the ticket counter closes 90 minutes before closing. Check the official schedule on the day. Our hours and best time to visit guide explains the calendar.
You need both a passport ticket and a visit reservation. On a rainy day, buy online before you leave rather than queuing outside at the ticket counter.
Getting there without getting soaked
Most of the journey is under cover. The Keio Line platforms at Shinjuku (新宿) are underground, and some West Shinjuku hotels connect to the station by underground passages. Our Shinjuku hotel guide notes which ones. The ride to Keio-Tama-Center (京王多摩センター) is about 30 minutes by limited express.

The open-air parts are the roughly 5-minute walk from Tama Center Station to the park and the entry queue. If you have a stroller, Puroland recommends the pedestrian walkway from the station, which leads straight to the 3F entrance. Our Tama Center Station guide explains which gate to use.

Leave wet umbrellas and extra layers in Puroland’s 3F cashless lockers (¥300–¥1,000 by size, same day only), so you don’t carry them all day.
Other indoor options at Tama Center

| Place | What it is | Hours (as of October 2026) | Walk from the station |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cocolia Tama Center | Shopping center (Maruzen bookstore, Muji, Uniqlo, food floor, restaurant floor) | B1–5F 10:00–20:00; 6F restaurants 11:00–22:00; Maruzen 10:00–21:00; Starbucks (1F) 7:00–22:00 | About 3 min (GO TOKYO) |
| Okanoue Plaza | Ito-Yokado plus specialty shops | Ito-Yokado food floor (1F) 10:00–21:00; 2F–4F 10:00–20:00; specialty shops 10:00–20:00 | On Puroland’s walking route. The official directions turn left at the crossroads past it |
| Parthenon Tama Museum | Local museum on Tama’s landscape, history and the Tama New Town development | 10:00–17:30; closed Dec 29–Jan 3 and on Parthenon Tama’s closed days | About 5 min (Tama City) |
| Aeon Cinema Tama Center | Cinema | Check the official schedule | Near the station |
Notes:
- Cocolia has a basement food floor with a food court, a restaurant floor on 6F, and one of Tokyo’s largest Maruzen bookstores, according to GO TOKYO. It’s the easiest place to wait out a downpour or have lunch between Puroland sessions.
- Parthenon Tama Museum reopened after renovation with the theme of a museum “that makes you want to explore the town”. It has an English leaflet you can download from its website. It also holds occasional mini concerts of its automatic musical instruments. One is scheduled for October 5–19, 2026, so check the museum’s event list.
- Aeon Cinema: most films in Japan are shown with Japanese subtitles or dubbing. Check the listing for the original-language subtitled version (字幕版) if you want English audio.

What to postpone if it rains
- The Whisper of the Heart walk in Seiseki Sakuragaoka. The route is outdoors and climbs a hill through residential streets. If you’re in Seiseki anyway, the Keio Department Store by the station is indoors and has a Sanrio corner on 7F.
- Tama Central Park and the Hello Kitty manhole covers. They’re outdoors. Save them for a break in the weather.
