Yes, Tama works well as a day trip from central Tokyo. Sanrio Puroland’s official access page puts Tama Center at about 30 minutes from Shinjuku by Keio limited express, so you can leave after breakfast and be back in the city for dinner. The real question is which combination to pick: Tama has two separate hubs (Tama Center and Seiseki Sakuragaoka), and trying to see everything in one day means a lot of uphill walking.

Below are three day plans, each built around one main goal, plus the timing and transport details that decide whether a plan feels relaxed or rushed.

Getting to Tama: the key routes

All times below are from official sources as of October 2026 and are approximate; actual times depend on the train type you catch.

FromRouteApprox. time
Shinjuku (新宿)Keio Line limited express to Keio-Tama-Center (京王多摩センター)About 30 min (Puroland official)
ShinjukuKeio semi-limited express, or Odakyu rapid express to Odakyu-Tama-Center (小田急多摩センター)About 35 min (GO TOKYO)
Shin-Yurigaoka (新百合ヶ丘, Odakyu)Odakyu Tama Line to Odakyu Tama CenterAbout 12 min (Puroland official)
Tachikawa (立川)Tama Monorail to Tama-Center (多摩センター)About 23 min (Puroland official)

Seiseki-sakuragaoka (聖蹟桜ヶ丘) Station is on the Keio main line between Shinjuku and Hachioji (八王子), so trains to Seiseki and trains to Tama Center split at Chofu (調布). Check the destination board on the platform. Detailed walk-throughs: Puroland from Shinjuku and Seiseki Sakuragaoka from Shinjuku.

Suica and PASMO work on all of these lines and on local buses, so you do not need separate tickets for each leg.

Plan A: Puroland and Tama Center (Sanrio fans, families)

The simplest plan, with almost no transfers.

TimeWhat to do
MorningTrain from Shinjuku to Tama Center. Walk to Puroland, looking for the Sanrio details along the way
Late morning to mid-afternoonSanrio Puroland: shows, greetings, lunch inside the park
Late afternoonTama Central Park (about 5 minutes from the station) or the free Tokyo Metropolitan Archaeological Center
EveningBack to Shinjuku. From mid-November, stay for the Tama Center Illumination first

Why it works: Puroland, the park and the museum are all walkable from the station, and Puroland is indoors, so the plan survives rain. Ticket prices vary by date, so book or check prices before you set the date.

Check dates and buy tickets on the Sanrio Puroland official site. For prices and how to buy, see Sanrio Puroland Tickets.

You can also book Sanrio Puroland e-tickets on Klook.

Plan B: Seiseki Sakuragaoka in the morning, Tama Center in the afternoon (Ghibli and Sanrio)

The best plan if you want to see both sides of Tama.

TimeWhat to do
MorningKeio Line from Shinjuku to Seiseki-sakuragaoka. Walk the Whisper of the Heart route up Iroha-zaka
Late morningOptional: Sakuragaoka Park and the free Former Tama Seiseki Memorial Hall (bus to Kinenkan-mae)
LunchNear Seiseki-sakuragaoka Station
AfternoonKeio bus from Seiseki-sakuragaoka Station to Tama Center Station
Afternoon to eveningPuroland, or a lighter Tama Center walk if you skip the park

Why this order: the Seiseki walk is mostly outdoors and uphill, so it is more comfortable in the cooler morning, while Puroland is indoors and keeps going into the late afternoon. Direct buses between the two stations save you from going back toward Chofu by train. Check the bus departure board at the station, as routes and frequency vary by time of day.

Things to keep in mind:

  • The Memorial Hall is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays (GO TOKYO, as of October 2026).
  • If you plan to enter Puroland, check that day’s closing time first. A half day there is enough for many adults; see A Half Day at Sanrio Puroland.

Plan C: Tama Center and Tama Zoo by monorail (animal lovers, families)

Tama Zoological Park is in neighboring Hino City, but the Tama Monorail gets you there quickly from Tama Center.

TimeWhat to do
MorningTrain to Tama Center, then Tama Monorail to Tama-Dobutsukoen (多摩動物公園) (8 min)
Morning to mid-afternoonTama Zoo (opens 9:30, entry until 16:00)
Late afternoonMonorail back to Tama Center. Tama Central Park or a short Sanrio walk
EveningTrain back to central Tokyo

Key facts (official, as of October 2026):

  • Monorail Tama-Center to Tama-Dobutsukoen: 3.7 km, 8 minutes, 265 yen with an IC card for adults.
  • Tama Zoo: 9:30–17:00, last entry 16:00, closed Wednesdays. Adult admission 600 yen; elementary school age and under free.
  • The zoo is on hills, so allow time and energy for slopes.

Which plan should you choose?

If you…Choose
Mainly want PurolandPlan A
Love Ghibli and also want some SanrioPlan B
Have children who like animalsPlan C

Expect rainPlan A (mostly indoors)
Are visiting late March to early AprilPlan B, for cherry blossoms in Seiseki (cherry blossom guide)

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip is enough for any single plan above. Consider staying near Tama Center if you want to arrive at Puroland at opening and stay until closing, if you are with small children, or if you want to do Plan B and Plan C on consecutive days. See Day Trip or Overnight? for how to decide.

Day-trip checklist

  • Check Puroland’s calendar and that day’s hours (they vary by date)
  • Avoid Wednesdays if Tama Zoo is in your plan
  • Charge your phone and load your IC card before leaving the city
  • Wear shoes you can walk uphill in
  • Check the last train you want back to your hotel

Prices and hours change. Check the official site before you go.
