Ukai Toriyama (うかい鳥山) is a restaurant in a large Japanese garden in the hills near Mt. Takao. It serves chicken and wagyu grilled over charcoal at an irori hearth, in private tatami-floored rooms. It’s a set-course meal for a special occasion. Courses start at ¥8,800 (weekdays only), plus a service charge. A free shuttle bus leaves from in front of Takaosanguchi Station at :00, :20 and :40 past the hour, and you don’t need to book it. You should book the meal itself, which you can do online up to three months ahead.

  • ¥5,500 (tax included, service extra). The menu includes a seasonal starter, soba with tempura, chicken grilled on a magnolia leaf with miso (hoba-yaki), kenchin soup, barley rice with grated yam, and a sweet. You can switch to wagyu rump for ¥1,650 more.

The Keio visitor set with a meal

Keio sells a digital set for overseas visitors on KKday called Mt. Takao + Keio 1-day Ticket – Ukai Toriyama. It includes the Keio one-day pass, a round trip on the Takao cable car or lift, and a voucher for the Charbroiled Beef & Chicken Course. The launch price in May 2025 was ¥14,610 for ages 12 and up.

Booked separately, the same things cost ¥1,000 (day pass) + ¥980 (cable car round trip) + ¥11,000 (course) = ¥12,980, plus Ukai’s service charge. The set’s advantages are paying once, in English, before your trip. Before buying, check on the product page how your meal time is booked. Our Keio one-day pass guide covers all the Keio visitor sets.

Keio’s news release links to the sales page.

Fitting it into a Takao day

  • Lunch after a morning hike: cable car up at 8:00 or 9:00, summit, down by about 12:30, then the shuttle at :00, :20 or :40.
  • Early dinner: hike, have a soak at Gokurakuyu next to the station, then a 17:00 table. See our Gokurakuyu guide.
  • Autumn: Ukai’s gassho lunch page mentions autumn leaves seen from the farmhouse’s large windows. The leaf season is also the mountain’s busiest time, so book early. See Mt. Takao autumn leaves.

Ukai’s English page describes the garden as about 20,000 m², with separate traditional buildings for the private rooms.

Prices and hours change. Check the official site before you go.
