The Mt. Takao Monkey Park and Wild Plant Garden (高尾山さる園・野草園) is a small two-in-one stop 3 minutes on foot from the top of the Takao cable car, right on Trail 1. The park has about 90 Japanese macaques, and keepers explain their social life with plenty of humour. The garden next to it grows about 300 kinds of wild plants. Admission is ¥600 for adults and ¥300 for children aged 3 and up (new prices from September 1, 2026), rising to ¥700 / ¥350 for all of November 2026. It’s an easy add-on for families or anyone on the cable car route.

Getting there

  1. Take the cable car from Kiyotaki to Takaosan Station (about 6 minutes). See the cable car guide.
  2. Leave the station and walk up Trail 1 toward the summit.
  3. When you reach the Juichicho-jaya (十一丁茶屋) tea house, turn right. The entrance is there.

The park says this takes about 3 minutes. Trail 2, the Kasumidai loop (0.9 km, about 40 minutes), circles the park and garden.

The park raised its prices on September 1, 2026, from ¥500 / ¥250, citing higher feed and transport costs. It now charges a high-season price at busy times, such as September 19–27 and November 2026.

Closed days: the park closes for maintenance on some days. For example, it is closed all day on October 8, 2026. Check the news on the official site.

Keio’s visitor set: Keio’s Mt. Takao + Keio 1-day Ticket for overseas visitors, sold on KKday and Klook, includes Monkey Park entry and a monkey feed voucher, plus the Keio one-day pass and a cable car or lift round trip. The launch price was ¥2,250 for ages 12 and up. See our Keio one-day pass guide.

The Monkey Park

The park describes its troop of about 90 monkeys as full of character. Keepers explain the monkeys’ ordered society and habits in a humorous way. The official site also has a family tree of the troop and a history of past boss monkeys, and runs events in busy seasons such as Golden Week and the autumn leaves.

The park’s mascot is a monkey called Momijimaru (もみじまる), and you’ll see him on the goods.

The garden next to the Monkey Park grows about 300 kinds of wild plants. Most are native to Mt. Takao, along with some sub-alpine and alpine species, and the garden tries to show them as they grow in nature. Highlights by season, from the park’s site:

SeasonExample
SpringTakao violet (タカオスミレ)
SummerRengeshoma (レンゲショウマ)
Late summerKarigane-so (カリガネソウ). The park’s flower news gave its best time as late August to early September

The official site posts a seasonal list of plants (PDF) and short “flower news” updates.

Souvenirs

At the entrance the park sells seasonal wild plants and pumice from Niijima for planting them (from ¥360). It also sells Momijimaru goods, such as postcards (¥100), badges (¥100), magnets (¥200) and plush toys (¥2,000). A capsule machine in the monkey viewing building sells pairs of badges of the monkey families for ¥200, for a limited time.

How long to spend and how to fit it in

  • The last entry is 16:15 (15:45 in winter). The last cable car down is at 17:15 or later depending on the month.

  • For the trails beyond the park, see our trail comparison.

Prices and hours change. Check the official site before you go.
