If Puroland is one day of a longer Tokyo trip, a hotel on the west or south side of Shinjuku Station is the easiest base: you walk a few minutes to the Keio Line, ride to Keio Tama Center (Puroland’s official site gives about 30 minutes by limited express), and walk about 5 minutes to the park. You do not need a hotel in Tama unless you have small children or want to stay until closing without a train ride afterwards.

The rest of this guide explains why “near the Keio Line” matters more than “near Shinjuku Station” in general, and compares hotels with officially stated walking times.

Why the Keio side of Shinjuku matters

Shinjuku Station is huge, and the walk between your hotel and your platform can take longer than you expect. For Puroland you want the Keio Line, whose Shinjuku platforms are underground on the west side of the station, below Keio Department Store. Hotels in West Shinjuku and around the South Exit are on that side; hotels in Kabukicho and the East Exit area are on the opposite side, so you will cross the station every time.

Not every train from Shinjuku goes to Tama Center. Trains bound for Hashimoto (橋本) run via Keio Tama Center; trains for Takao (高尾) or Keio-Hachioji (京王八王子) do not. If you board one of those, change at Chofu (調布) for the Sagamihara Line. Check the destination on the platform board before you get on.

The Odakyu Line also reaches Tama Center (Odakyu-Tama-Center (小田急多摩センター) Station), usually with a change at Shin-Yurigaoka (新百合ヶ丘). Puroland’s official site lists about 12 minutes from Shin-Yurigaoka. For most hotel choices in Shinjuku, though, the Keio Line is simpler. Our step-by-step route from Shinjuku covers both.

These hotels are all confirmed open as of October 2026. Walking times are what each hotel states on its official site, measured to the JR station exits. Allow a few extra minutes to reach the Keio ticket gates inside the station.

If you prefer the East Exit side

Hotel Gracery Shinjuku states a 5-minute walk from the JR Shinjuku East Exit and 3 minutes from Seibu-Shinjuku (西武新宿) Station. It works if you want to be in Kabukicho for the evenings. Just plan for the walk through or around the station to the Keio Line on the west side each time you go to Tama.

A 2026 change to know about

Hotel Century Southern Tower, a hotel by the South Exit that older guides often recommend, stopped taking guests after check-out on October 1, 2026 for a guest-room renovation ahead of its 30th anniversary in spring 2028. Check its official site for the reopening date. If an older article or a cached booking page lists it, choose another hotel for now.

How to choose

Ask yourself these questions, in this order:

  1. How much luggage will you carry through the station? If the answer is “big suitcases”, a short, simple walk (South Exit or the West Exit underground route) matters more than room size.
  2. Will you arrive by airport bus? Busta Shinjuku is by the South Exit, and Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo runs its own limousine buses.
  3. What will you do in the evenings? If it’s dinner in West Shinjuku or Omoide Yokocho, stay west. If it’s Kabukicho, stay east and accept a longer walk to the Keio Line.
  4. Are you visiting Seiseki Sakuragaoka (聖蹟桜ヶ丘) too? It is on the same Keio Line (¥360 ticket / ¥356 IC from Shinjuku, as of October 2026), so a west-side hotel makes both days easy.

A sample Puroland day from Shinjuku

This outline assumes a hotel on the west or south side.

  • Morning: Leave the hotel about 50–60 minutes before your Puroland entry time. That covers the walk to the Keio gates, the roughly 30-minute ride, and the 5-minute walk from Keio Tama Center. Puroland needs both a passport ticket and a visit reservation, so book both before the day.
  • Midday: Puroland allows re-entry all day with a hand stamp at the exit, so you can step out to eat around Tama Center if you like.
  • Evening: Return on the Keio Line. If you have shopping bags, use the cashless lockers on Puroland’s 3F (¥300–¥1,000 by size) during the day, not the station.

When Shinjuku is not the right base

Shinjuku works for a day trip. Consider staying in Tama instead if:

  • you are traveling with small children and want to rest without a train ride at the end of the day,
  • you want to stay at Puroland until closing and then simply go to bed,
  • you are spending the next day in the Tama area.

Quick checklist

  • Hotel is on the west or south side of Shinjuku Station (or you accept a longer walk)
  • You know the Keio Line platforms are underground below Keio Department Store
  • You’ll board a train bound for Hashimoto, or change at Chofu
  • Puroland passport ticket and visit reservation are both booked
  • You’ve checked the day’s opening hours on Puroland’s official schedule (they vary by date)

Prices and hours change. Check the official site before you go.
